Caffeine limit in pregnancy reduced

The Food Standards Agency is to reduce the recommended caffeine intake levels by over 30% this week to just 200mg per day. The anticipated announcement follows research conducted by Leeds and Leicester Universities that found that women who consumed more than 200mg of Caffeine during pregnancy were more likely to give birth to smaller babies.

Whilst the FSA has stressed that the risks are minimal if you have been consuming the previously recommended 300mg, advice will now be to restrict to 200mg, the equivalent to two cups of brewed coffee. Advice is to read the labels and ask in coffee shops as caffeine levels vary dramatically with some energy drinks containing 800mg and some coffee shops serving nearly 250mg cups of coffee.
