Your Pregnancy Bible - The Expert's Guide to the nine months of Pregnancy and the first weeks of Parenthood

"If you are looking for a comprehensive step by step pregnancy guide, this could be the book to buy. Not cheap at £22.99 hardback, and a heavyweight piece of pre-delivery kit; but for a 1st time pregnancy fairly good value for money, if you want helpful guidance all in one place.

The style of the book is pretty straightforward. The pictures, some drawings and real photos place a degree of realism into what can feel a bit of a surreal time. An emphasis is placed on good health, rather than the pregnancy alone, giving inclusive information about the entire pregnancy and wellbeing.

I particularly like the section "The First Signs of Pregnancy", simply because it strips the mystery from the bits that doctors love to tell you about due dates and weight gain. It is all in plain English, but manages not to dumb down too far. I like, too the medical problems section at the back of the book with practical advice.

The book has a pull out guide to your pregnant body with pictures and guides through the kind of feelings that can arise. My husband liked the section for prospective fathers for the same reason.

Aside from cost and size of this book, the only negative I would point to and it is not alone in this, is that it treats pregnancy as if it is given it will be normal. Although a small percentage, actual numbers of early deliveries are quite high. We really struggled to find information about our situation. Whilst this book goes a bit further than the usual statement about gestation periods and how usual it is for babies to survive, the dedicated 1 page is 10 pages from the end of the book and after all of the advice about first days at home. The fact is, I didn't get to anti-natal classes, had counselling about things a parent dreads, possible emergency caesarean and weeks in intensive and special care.

Whilst there is a responsibility not to place fear into Mums and Dads-to-be, I do think it could go further in explaining basic principles behind what will happen and how it can feel.

All in all a really useful book to have around the house, particularly for a 1st pregnancy."

The Best Friends' Guide to…. Pregnancy

Vicky Iovine

Publisher - Bloomsbury Press

On discovering that I was expecting my second child I thought that I would read the 'Best Friends Guide to Pregnancy'. You know what it's like with subsequent pregnancies. You know that the factual books are right 5 out of 10 times for you and that no where do they mention the fun of going to the loo for the first time after having your child or any of the 'other' stuff that your midwife conveniently forgets. So you don't bother to get informed with the same intensity, you know that what will happen will happen, then I read this book.

It in no way intends to inform from a medical viewpoint but merely expresses the views of the 'friends' over some of the issues and stages you go through. The sections on hormonal changes and the 'husband effect' had me crying with laughter. So much so that I'm sure that the people in the canteen at work, where I was reading this book, thought I was having a breakdown! Some of the descriptions are so accurate you just know that they are real. In fact, I read it cover to cover despite being only 20 weeks.

My biggest joy was the fact that it tells you things that no-one else will. I'm sure that first time pregnant people will read it and think that she and the 'friends' are exaggerating, perhaps having done it once, I appreciated it that much more.

The other books in the series are:

  • The Best Friends' Guide to… Surviving the 1st Year of Motherhood;
  • The Best Friends' Guide to… Toddlers.
  • 'Best Friends Guide to...Getting Your Groove Back'

"I have to say that all Vicki Iovine's books are fantastic. She really tells it how it is, and they make me laugh out loud. I buy the 'Pregnancy' one for all my friends as soon as they announce they are pregnant. I think I keep Ms. Iovine in business in the UK! There are four books now, and the latest one, 'Best Friends Guide to...Getting Your Groove Back', is aimed at mothers like me who are trying to rediscover that woman that we used to be (and forgotten all about). Highly recommended!"

What to Expect When You're Breast-feeding …. And What if You Can't?

Clare Byam-Cook

Publisher - Vermilion (Random House)

From the reviews I've read of this book you'll either love it or hate it! If you've not experienced problems breastfeeding then it's probably not for you. If like me, it didn't feel so natural, if you've hit problems or if you just need some help/support then Clare's book will help! Her advice is practical, down to earth and most importantly appears to work!

Clare is the first 'expert' that I've ever come across that's actually happy to admit that 'breastfeeding for some mothers is just not possible'!

I feel that Clare has a very balanced approach. She manages to promote breastfeeding whilst also taking away the guilt and feelings of inadequancy from mums who find breastfeeding not quite as 'natural' as they've been led to believe!

I wish I had read it when I was a new mum! It might have saved me many days of worry, torment and guilt!

Babyshock!

Elizabeth Martyn, Relate

Publisher - Vermillion (Random House)

If there is one book that I would recommend to anyone who's either planning a family or coping with one, it's Babyshock! by Relate.

This is an outstanding book as it really does honestly review parenting from the parent's perspective. It tackles issues head on, does not pull its punches and includes many relevant examples of how couples have struggled with the issues the covered by the book.

The best part of the book is the honest feedback and comments from the parents themselves. The book admits that some parents failed to address issues that they were trying to tackle, which is also strangely an encouragement. It just reinforces the view, that there is no such thing as a perfect parent and no such thing as a perfect partner. Trying to be both is a complete non starter!

The Best Friend's Guide to... Surviving the First Year of Motherhood!

"The fact that this knowledgeable and informative book also manages to combine humour made it so easy to read in the few snatched moments that the new mother finds with their new arrival.

I found that this smorgasbord of information contained practical tips and lots of laughs and a tale or two that they and their friends have had the fortune or in some cases misfortune to have, this book always shines through managing to lift the spirit or suggest a solution to an otherwise sticky situation.

I feel that both the authors have successfully taken a personal view on a what can be said the most hectic time in a woman's life and turned it into magnificant and compulsive read. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of humour and is looking for a different and slightly unbalanced view on first time motherhood or equally to a nervous prospective mother to be, as this book will shatter all the myths and urban legends associated with the spawning of ones first offspring.

I have been a professional, fully trained and suitably qualified nanny for over 14 years and a first time mother since January of this year and I managed to find plenty of tit-bits to keep me amused and I even heard myself mutter " I didn't know that" on the odd occasion and I most certainly will be keeping hold of this book for any future children I may have.............husband willing of course.

I would recommend this book to any of my friends but if they asked to borrow mine I am afraid I would have to say "go and buy your own your not getting my copy!""

Ruth, first time mother to a bundle of joy named Jack Edward.

Kate Konopicky
Publisher - Vermilion

A Woman of No Importance

"This book is absolutely hilarious. I didn't stop laughing from page to page or chapter to chapter. On the 'giggle meter', Kate Konopicky is comparable with Tom Sharpe, as my husbnd stated that he'd not heard me giggle as much since I last read "Wilt on High".

I think every mother-to-be should be issued with this book along with the mother to be pack. It would save a lot of heartache particularly for first time mothers, as they would realise that there is no such thing as a 'perfect mother'. If you're not showered or dressed before lunchtime in the early days after the birth it's OK, as long as baby and Mum are happy and healthy.

It would also make you realise that a lot of well meaning advice can be safely ignored. Because as soon as you are comfortable with you're own instincts, you as a mother know what is best for your baby. Bringing up babies/children has changed over a number of years and despite what was thought of as good practise according to Great Grandmothers, Grandmothers, Mothers and Mothers-in-laws, they are not always right, despite their vast experiences.

I think the funniest example given by Kate Konopicky is what a friend of hers was told by her Mother-in-law. "On no account give your baby son a massage, because it would turn him into a homosexual". I can empathise with receiving this kind of advice as follows. A Great Aunt of mine told me when my oldest son was a baby and suffered quite badly with wind. "It's your own fault, if you'd listen to me and put half a teaspoon of brandy in his bottle, he'd be fine".

Well despite not listening and my obviously haphazard methods of parenting, (according to my Great Aunt). I'm pleased to report that he has survived and is now a strapping 21 year old. Kate's friends Mother-in-law and my Great Aunt must have come from the same planet, certainly not earth.

As you turn the pages of this book there is so much that you can relate to, various situations make you think of similar things that have happened to you.

We follow Kate from the birth of her daughter up to when she is six. She looks at child rearing, changes in relationships, society’s views on mothers, teaching your children and many more issues. All of which have been done numerous times, in "How to be good parents books". However none has achieved the humour that Kate has and despite or should I say because of the use of humour to illustrate these points, I feel a lot can be learned regarding parenting from this book.
